A member of United Scenic Artists, Calvert has designed scenery professionally for many theatre companies in New York City and across the country, including multiple projects at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, the Warehouse Theatre and Olney Theatre Center. He also spent years working in New York City as an Assistant Scenic Designer for Allen Moyer, Paul Steinberg, Andrew Lieberman, Loy Arcenas and Peter Dean Beck on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regional and international theatre and opera productions.
Calvert served as the Chair of Design, Technology and Management for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (Region IV). He is also a member of the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC), the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT).
Calvert’s students have enjoyed successful internships at Berkshire Theatre Festival, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Williamstown Theatre Festival. In addition, his students have been accepted into MFA programs at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Purdue University, Boston University and University of Tennessee - Knoxville. Additionally, his students have received numerous awards for their design work at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) and SETC. Most recently, one of Calvert's students was a co-recipient of the 2022 KCACTF National Award in Scenic Design.
"Students come to CCM to prepare for careers on the world's stages. Drawing upon his experiences as both a scenic designer and an educator, Charlie will be an ideal mentor for future generations of theatre design and production professionals,” said Romanstein. “I would like to acknowledge the excellent work of our search committee, which was co-chaired by Michele Kay and Mark Halpin and included faculty members Kevin Lawson, Elizabeth Payne and Greg Eldridge, along with students Abigail Heyd and Sean Haffey.”
