Clermont County recently issued the following announcement.
Construction of the first SmartLane corridor in the Ohio Department of Transportation - Cincinnati District 8 is coming to Interstate 275, and work on the first phase will get under way in early Spring.
The total SmartLane project will add a “smart lane” on I-275 between U.S. 42 in Hamilton County and S.R. 28 in Clermont County by widening the median (inside) shoulders, which will serve as an additional lane during peak times of traffic to relieve congestion.
Using technology to manage access and speed and communicate with motorists, SmartLane corridors allow an extra lane of travel on upgraded highway shoulders during certain times to alleviate congestion and aid incident management efforts.
Studies have found there is a link between changes in congestion and changes in the safety performance of a roadway when part-time shoulder use is in operation, and this innovative design solution and accompanying technology help mitigate safety risks on limited access highways.
As part of the initial project, contractors will make pavement repairs and resurface I-275 between U.S. 42 and the Loveland-Madeira Road interchange, widen the median shoulders between I-71 and Loveland-Madeira Road, and install dynamic message boards and a variable speed limit for a SmartLane on westbound I-275.
Ohio's first smart corridor, the I-670 SmartLane on the east side of Columbus in Franklin County, opened in October 2019. Additional information about SmartLanes can also be found here: https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/.../smart-corridors
The John R. Jurgensen Company was awarded a contract for approximately $22 million to complete the I-275 project. Construction is scheduled to begin in April, and the first section of the westbound SmartLane is scheduled to be open in the summer of 2023.
A second project to complete the I-275 SmartLane corridor is currently in the design stages and is programmed for sale in 2026.
