Congressman Brad Wenstrup led a panel discussion at the American Enterprise Institute on AI and Biosecurity. The panel addressed the threats posed by evolving technologies and steps Congress can take to secure AI and biotechnology fields.
Regarding Wenstrup's leadership, Chairman Mike Turner stated, "Dr. Wenstrup...is a surgeon himself, having served in the Army retiring as a Colonel...the Chair of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic...question the data and information that both the public and Congress have received and the work that the Intelligence Community has done to identify COVID-19 origins."
Turner emphasized the importance of understanding COVID-19 origins due to threats to national security from the weaponization of pathogens.
In a statement, Wenstrup highlighted the importance of engaging with experts and stakeholders to gather feedback, while Dan Blumenthal from the American Enterprise Institute praised the House Intelligence Committee's effort to engage with national security communities.
Dov Zakheim discussed the need for efficient emergency funding allocation to respond promptly to unforeseen events. Anna Puglisi emphasized not rewarding China's national champions due to their ties to the CCP, and Anthony Ruggiero discussed the differing approaches needed for cooperating and non-cooperating countries. Ken Staley proposed maintaining a warm capacity for future emergencies.
