EcoHealth Alliance President Dr. Peter Daszak is set to appear for a public hearing on May 1, 2024, following discrepancies in his previous testimony to the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic and other committees. The Chairs of the committees have raised concerns about the veracity of EcoHealth's statements regarding the funding of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).
In a letter to Dr. Daszak, the Chairs stated, "These revelations undermine your credibility as well as every factual assertion you made during your transcribed interview." They have called on Dr. Daszak to address the inconsistencies in his testimony and explain EcoHealth's relationship with the WIV.
The Chairs are also requesting additional information from Dr. Daszak about EcoHealth's communication with the WIV, public health agencies, and individuals involved in the suppression of the lab-leak hypothesis in preparation for the upcoming public hearing.
Background information reveals that EcoHealth had initially planned to conduct gain-of-function research at the WIV instead of a lab in the United States, as previously stated by Dr. Daszak. The Chairs highlighted concerns about EcoHealth's approach to biosafety and grant compliance, along with Dr. Daszak's misleading statements, emphasizing the need for further clarification during the hearing.
The public hearing on May 1, 2024, will provide an opportunity for Dr. Peter Daszak to address the discrepancies in his testimony and provide clarity on EcoHealth Alliance's involvement with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
