Washington, D.C. - Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3667, the Social Security Child Protection Act of 2023, a bipartisan legislation introduced by Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH). The bill aims to address the challenges faced by families in obtaining a new social security number for their children after their original number has been compromised due to identity fraud.

Under the current policies of the Social Security Administration, it is difficult for families to obtain a new social security number for a child whose card has been lost or stolen. The Social Security Child Protection Act seeks to rectify this issue by directing the Social Security Administration to issue a new social security number to a child under the age of 14 if their card was lost or stolen during transit.

Rep. Wenstrup emphasized the importance of this legislation in providing families with the necessary tools to protect their children's identities. He stated, "Parents and families across America should be able to protect their children if their child's social security number is compromised. This legislation will give families the tools they need to replace their child’s Social Security number if their card has been lost or stolen early in life. I am pleased that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle see the value of this legislation to help American families."

The passage of the Social Security Child Protection Act by the House of Representatives demonstrates bipartisan support for addressing the issue of identity fraud and its impact on children. The legislation recognizes the need for a streamlined process to provide families with a means to protect their children's social security numbers.

With the House's approval, the bill will now move to the Senate for further consideration. If passed in the Senate and signed into law, the Social Security Child Protection Act will provide much-needed relief to families across the country, ensuring that their children's identities are safeguarded.

The passage of H.R. 3667 is a significant step towards combating identity fraud and protecting the future of American families. As Rep. Wenstrup aptly stated, "I am pleased that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle see the value of this legislation to help American families."
